How to save your pet’s life: Hymlic Maneuver, Cuts, CPR

On the Dr. Oz Show, aired on December 14, 2009, they taught how to safe your pet’s life in an emergency.

How to perform the hymlic maneuver on your 4 legged pet.

Pick them up by the hind legs and shake them.  If that does not work, with the palm of your hand, hit them between the shoulder blades.  On a small dog, pick them up with their back towards your chest and with your fist pull up towards their chest, towards you a number of times…in and up…in and up.

When your dog cuts themselves

When they cut their feet, first protect yourself.  Create a muzzle with some gauze by tying it around their muzzle and then around the back of their neck.

You want to stop the bleeding.  Apply pressure to the wound with some gauze.  Do not take off the gauze.  Give the clot a chance to form.

Then you are going to clean the wound.  You can use a KY type of jelly, trim the hair and rinse it off with water.  Use some anti-bacterial soap, a triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin, applied with a telfa pad, and then wash it off with water. When wrapping the wound always wrap from the bottom to the top because this forces the fluid up.  Always start with the paw.

CPR for dogs

For a small dog you place your hands on their sides, just above their forelegs and apply pressure on and off 10 times, while lying on their sides.  For a larger dog you would just apply pressure with both your hands, one on top of the other, on the upper side, above the hip joint.  You give 10 compressions (pressure on).

Then cover their nose and breathe in the mouth once.

Repeat the above until your pet is revived.

Then visit your veterinarian.

Animal Quote of the Day:

“If you have a cat that will not come to you when called, just start acting like a cat and ignore them sometimes.  They will soon come running in no time.” ~ Carla Spacher
