Because I am working on my nutrition and weight loss, I recently purchased a DigiWeigh Dgital Nutritional Scale on eBay. I just received it and I am loving it! Nutritional scales are food scales and nutritional scales in one. Now I can weigh each food item and the scale counts the total carbohydrates, calories, cholesterol, fat, sodium, protein and fiber for me. It even stores the amounts in memory so that I may track my total daily values. I believe I got a really good deal, too!
The scale that I purchased has a few features that I really wanted:
1. I just press the memory button and it will save my totals for that day. The next morning all I have to do is clear out the memory.
2. It has 999 foods already memorized.
3. The top is made from tempered glass. Stainless and glass tops are usually recommended. This is best for not collecting any bacteria from foods. With the glass I feel even better that because my food is not in contact with any metals.
4. You just press a button after you place the plate or whatever container you wish to use, especially for liquids, and the scale will take into account the weight of the dish. This is the “tare function”.
With all nutrtional scales, you are required to enter a code corresponding to the food item. Most of them are a 3 digit code. There is another, more expensive, scale available that features 2000 memorized food items, but because I do not eat a lot of processed foods I was happy with this one which calculates 999.
There are a few scales on the market that will actually allow you to customize your own food items. Say you have a protein bar that you eat on a regular basis. You can then program the scale to save its nutritional values.
My first use of the scale was with an apple. One medium apple should have about 21 carbs and 81 calories. My apple was obviously larger because it weighed in at 8.7 ounces and calculated over 37.44 carbs, 145 calories, 6.7 fiber. I consider that a big difference. I suppose we do not always consider the size of fruit and other foods when calculating its nutritional values.
I purchased my DigiWeigh Scale on eBay. Most retailers are selling the same scale for $54.99. I purchased it for $24.95 plus shipping. Just go to eBay and search for ”Digital Nutrition Scale Diet Food Calorie Carb Counting”. Target also carries a few scales and one of them is on sale, at this writing.
If you are interested in purchasing the scale that has 2000 memorized foods you can view the HSN video on Perfect Portions Glass-Top Nutritional Scale. It sells for $49.95 and will be available again March 2010. I really like this one because you do not have to press a different button to see each nutritional value, as in the DigiWeigh Scale. This scale has all the values on one screen, just like food packaging.
Happy health and have fun!
Carla
