See below for a little history of the Feingold Association, its founder, The Feingold Diet and Feingold Program.
How was the Feingold Diet Developed?
Dr. Ben F. Feingold was a well known pediatrician and allergist, and was Chief of Allergy at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco. While working with patients he suspected to be sensitive to aspirin, he noticed that they also experienced a reaction to certain foods and food additives. He discovered that not only did some people have physical reactions, but individuals experienced changes in their behavior.
Just as mind altering drugs, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, can alter a person’s behavior, certain food additives and chemicals can do the same.
In the late 1960′s and early 1970′s, Dr. Feingold developed what he named the “KP”(Kaiser Permanente) diet. He based it on the Lockey allergy diet used at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Feingold found that he could help about 50% of the children who were diagnosed with hyperactivity. Later, when he also eliminated the preservatives BHT and BHA he found he could help about 70% of these children.
The media changed the name of the KP Diet to the Feingold Diet, and parent support groups chose the names “Feingold Association” and “Feingold Program” to honor the doctor who had helped their families. More information about Dr. Feingold.
