Dr. Oz on Supplements for Fibroids – also for Cramps and Anxiety

On the Dr. Oz show, February 25, 2010, Dr. Oz discussed the often unnecessary procedure of hysterectomy.  One of the major unnecessary reasons women have a hysterectomy is fibroids.  There are a number of options versus removing your uterus.  Laser removal of fibroids was one of them.

Among Dr. Oz’ suggested alternative remedies for fibroid were a few natural supplements:

“Herbal teas can be effective.  Cramp bark, appropriately named, is an antispasmodic.  The other is valerian root, which actually works on the brain.  It seems to work on some of the receptors of the brain which make us anxious.  It may be some of the feedback loops that cause the stress and discomfort.”

Per “How Stuff Works,” Cramp bark usually works quickly for general menstrual cramps, but if your symptoms are due to inflammation or irritation of the uterus or ovaries, endometrial infections or cysts, you may find better relief from taking black haw.  Black haw is related to camp bark and is used to relieve uterine cramps, congestion, and irritation of the uterus and ovaries when you have pain which radiates.

Per Organic Grocery Deals “Valerian root- works like valium, is a natural relaxer. Is an herb and can interact with other medications that you’re on, so you need to be careful with it.”

Valerian root is available in your local drug store or online.

Since Dr. Oz  did not mention any specific herbal teas I will list a few that I found online:

Mother Nature suggests a recipe for Uterine Fibroid Tea

Green Tea Extract May Treat Uterine Fibroids

Fibroid Buster Tea

I hope you find the best remedy for you!

    I found a 100% Cramp Bark product (500 mg. – 60 ct.) for only $2.24 at http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SW1148/ItemDetail?SourceCode=INTL405&CAWELAID=129500050
There is one review stating that it helps cramps. I usually use magnesium for any any type of cramps, the powdered form that you put in boiling water, namely “Calm”.

Sorry I did not respond to your comment sooner, Lisa, but I moved my blog to http://glutenfreerecipebox.com and don’t really post health topics any longer. Definitely see a doctor right away if haven’t already. I read somewhere that they now can shrink them. Have you researched all of the different types of procedures? Hysterectomy and removal is not your only option. Good luck!
