I posted Dr. Vikki Petersen’s Gluten-free Goulash Recipe a few days ago. She suggested using Tinkayada gluten-free pasta spirals.
Tinkyada gluten-free pastas are known for their gourmet quality; having a look and texture of real pasta; and are not mushy. Tinkyada manufacturers a few varieties that are cholesterol free and the spirals are one of them. The spirals’ only ingredients are brown rice, rice bran and water. They are also egg free, milk and casein free, corn free, wheat free, soy free, tree nut free, peanut free, vegetarian, kosher, low sodium, no preservatives added and are 100% organic. You can check out other varieties at Tinkyada varieties to see what those are free of and contain, but see the link below for the best deal I found. Read the rest of this entry »

I was searching online for the best price on white rice flour and stumbled across a website that not only sells gluten-free products, including white rice flour for only $1.50 per pound, but sells blends of flours for different cooking and baking purposes. This really takes all the guess-work out for those just starting a gluten-free diet. They also ship their products at their real shipping costs, not adding on any handling fees. Deby’s Gluten Free flours are a deal! They are located in Denver, Colorado, which makes shipping inexpensive for us West Coasters. Read the rest of this entry »

· Filed under Dr. Oz, Food, Health · Tagged Dr. Oz, February 9 2010 episode of Dr. Oz Show, high fiber foods, How to prevent constipation
On today’s (February 9, 2010), episode of the Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Oz shared three foods that are beneficial for preventing constipation. They are not all just high in fiber. He did not mention anything about prunes. Most of us already know that high fiber foods are the way to go, but I was surprised at one of the foods he mentioned.
Per World’s Healthiest Foods,
Raspberries are packed with fiber. Just one cup provides 33% of the recommended DV (daily value) for dietary fiber. They contain even more Vitamin C and Manganese.
Lentils like other beans, are rich in dietary fiber, both the soluble and insoluble type. Just one cup provides 62.6% of the recommended DV for dietary fiber.
Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. One papaya contains about 21.9% of the recommended DV for dietary fiber. There is a higher concentration of this enzyme in the unripened papaya, therefore, drinking the juice is better for your digestive health. It also contains 313.1%.
Dr. Oz added that the average woman needs to get 21 grams of fiber per day.

Hemp nutritional facts are amazing: Omega 3, Omega 6, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, phosphorus and does not affect the digestive tract. It is very easily digested. It contains protein, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids. These are things our bodies need!
Hemp is not marijuana
Industrial hemp is non-psychoactive, unlike hemp that refers to marijuana. Industrial hemp is good for you! Read the rest of this entry »

· Filed under Food, Health · Tagged Allergies, Best place to buy raw honey, Local honey, Pollen allergies
I am in the middle of researching raw honey, attempting to find what is the best place to buy honey and the best type for me. I have found that honey originates from several sources. There are nectar honeys, some of which are orange blossom honey, lavender honey, alfalfa honey, etc. The honey is extracted from those plant sources by the bees. Then there is honeydew honey which is made by the bees taking secretions of aphids and scale insects. These insects feed off the sap of plants and excrete it while feeding. This is a darker honey.

My first thought was that I should stay away from any honey that is a plant sourced honey in case I have an allergy to that plant, or perhaps it would be best to consume the honeydew honey to avoid allergies altogether. But I discovered the complete opposite! I found that there is actually an advantage to consuming honey from plants because it can prevent allergies. When you are exposed to anything long enough, that over-exposure can turn into an allergy. Well, by consuming the same pollen through honey is known to have the opposite effect on a person. Example: If you live near an area that is predominantly saturated with a particular wild Read the rest of this entry »

I wanted to know if agave nectar was healthy and if it was healthier for me than stevia or xylitol.
What is Agave Nectar and How is it Processed?
Agave nectar is a sweetener produced mainly in Mexico. The juice is extracted from the core of the Agave tequiliana plant, heated into simple sugars and filtered. It is comprised mostly of fructose. The juice is concentrated into a syrup, usually thinner than honey, but sweeter. Per a Wall Street Journal article, Agave nectar’s marketing campaigns claim that it raises blood sugar levels less than refined sugar; and that has a lower glycemic index (it creates less of a sugar rush). As usual, the medical profession is skeptical and issued a warning for diabetics to beware. The calories are about the same as sugar, sometimes more. Read the rest of this entry »
