Mangos: How to choose, cut and tell when mangos are ripe

Many people are unfamiliar with mangos.  I sure was!  I explain how to tell when a mango is ripe and how to cut a mango.  They are very similar to avocados, but are trickier to cut because of their odd shape pit.  They have a pit that does not appear to be in the center of the mango, as well as running through almost through the entire fruit, on two sides.

How to Tell if an Avocado is Ripe

I was watching “Good Eats” on The Food Network last night and learned how to tell if an avocado is ripe or not.  First ensure the avocado is soft, not mushy.  You then just need to remove the stem at the end and ensure it is green in color underneath.  This will mean that it is either ripe or will be in the next day or so.  If you are choosing a Hass avocado ensure it is dark in color, not a bright green, but a dark green or blackish color.
